Day at the University
At our popular Day at the University program, members select from a series of engaging lectures on history, art, music, adventure, politics, or law and listen to our noted keynote speaker.
Day at the University 2025
About 160 members of the Retired Teachers Chapter gathered at UFT headquarters on June 13 for the UFT Welfare Fund Department of Retiree Programs’ 30th annual Day at the University. They were schooled on such topics as elder law and the U.S. Supreme Court, learned about luminaries including Billy Joel and John Lennon and the Beatles, and got to see New York City through the eyes of famous artists.
Retirees listen and learn about a wide range of topics during the 30th annual Day at the University event at UFT headquarters.
Sheila Krugman, a retired teacher from PS130 Brooklyn, poses a question to plenary speaker Anthony Scaramucci, a financier and broadcaster who discussed “The Economic Case for Public Education.”
Retired adult education teacher Gale Lichter makes fellow attendees laugh as she jokes that Scaramucci, who briefly served as President Trump’s communications director in 2017, is not calling on people on the left side of the room.
Retirees tune in to the day’s keynote address given by author Clive Young about singer Billy Joel’s New York.
Retirees engage in a workshop on elder law, asset protection and the UFT Welfare Fund Retiree Legal Plan.
Retirees listen intently during the “New York City as Muse” workshop, where slides are shown of the city as viewed by famous artists like Edward Hopper and Keith Haring.
Frank Sorrentino, a retired St. Francis College political science professor, addresses retirees during a lecture titled, “The Politics of the Supreme Court.”
Retirees are enthused by Scaramucci’s plenary speech.
Retirees line up to have Scaramucci sign copies of one of his recent books, which he gave to all attendees following his speech.
